The Process Safety Engineer as a practitioner is a corporate resource position responsible for providing process safety management (PSM) expertise and support to all PVS chemical manufacturing sites across the USA. This position reports to the Corporate EHSS Director.

Primary Responsibilities (may include but not limited to):

  • Provides internal resource to support PVS Facilities in all areas of Process Safety studies, particularly leading Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Layer of Protection Analysis (LoPA) studies.
  • Assists Facilities with the implementation of Process Safety Programs and Management systems.
  • Coordinates and facilitates Process Safety Management procedure development and maintenance.
  • Serves as resource for process safety training and knowledge development.
  • Develops and delivers training in Process Safety methodologies.
  • Works with Operations to ensure procedures and operating equipment limits have been reviewed and risk-assessed
  • Supports PSM metrics generation and seeks to identify problems and opportunities for improving process safety performance
  • Supports Process Hazard Analysis (PHA). Maintains schedule and ensures schedule is met. Coordinates and may help facilitate HAZOPs (Hazard & Operability Analysis), HAZIDs (Hazard Identification) and job safety analysis. Coordinates documentation, report findings and recommendations. Tracks actions to completion. Helps operations resolve outstanding issues
  • Coordinates and supports the Management of Change (MOC) process
  • Participates and leads Process Safety Management system Audits.
  • Participates and leads Process Safety incident investigations.
  • Generally provides coaching and consultation in Process Safety to the sites.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Experience leading Process Hazard Analysis reviews, LOPA’s, and Process Safety Audits.
  • Knowledge of Facility Siting, and Mechanical Integrity programs highly desired.
  • Good interpersonal, facilitation, and communication skills with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Familiar with risk identification and minimization techniques, failure mechanisms, protection systems and their design.
  • Knowledge of regulations of Process Safety Management (PSM) & EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP)
  • Knowledge of industry standards and recommended practices (NFPA, ASME, etc.).
  • Knowledge and understanding of Responsible Care (RC) Process Safety Code and apply PSM to NACD RD Code requirements.
  • Cultural awareness and a strong belief and conviction for Process Safety are necessary.
  • Working knowledge of root cause analysis, causal factors, and action item management.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Anticipation of hazards through participation in capital project reviews and process change reviews
  • Proactively managing risk through consultative support relating to use of inherently safer processes, engineering controls, work practices, training and personal protective equipment ensembles.
  • Ability to work with considerable independence in defining daily work activities
  • Ability to work with a diverse team. Ability to coach, mentor and increase self-reliance of site teams.

Required Education / Skills / Equivalent Experience (prior to hire / transfer):

  • Degree in relevant Engineering discipline with experience of chemical plant operation and design.
  • Experience leading Process Hazard Analysis reviews, LOPA’s, SIL’s and Process Safety Audits.
  • Knowledge of OSHA Process Safety Management and EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP)
  • Knowledge of Industry standards
  • Ability to work with considerable independence
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication
  • Must be able to audit to PSM and RMP requirements
